My work is inspired by my interests in anthropology, archaeology, architecture and astrology. Since my arrival in Miami in 2001, I began to investigate the cultural history and philosophy of China. I, also, began to examine my journey as a daughter of immigrants growing up in the back room of a Chinese hand laundry to being an artist, observing, navigating and traveling the world at large.
An inspiration develops into a story with research, then manifests in different materials as diverse as clay, wood, metal, paint, fiber, textile and beads, each with their inherent expressive quality. I execute my work on small scale canvases with intricate embroidery and beads or works on paper to large scale interactive installations and everything in between. An illustrated book of stories is a work in progress.
I received a BFA in Ceramic Sculpture from Parson School of Design in New York and a MFA in Sculpture from Hunter College in New York. I have studied and traveled extensively in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Africa. I reside in New York and Miami. |
