Work Statement Biography
Process becomes my dream catching vehicle. I believe in actions, strategy, practice, formula and the whittling down of odds. I have come to realize that anything that I dream or could possibly dream is really only a fragment and therefore not completely defined. There are multiple pieces, layers and stages all of which I could never imagine. However, each is essential, ‘caught’ and then later revealed in their own time. In the spirit of the Native American, Chippewa originated tradition of creating and hanging dream catchers, my personal interpretation and abstraction of this particular ritual intends to hold the essence of the dream catcher by allowing for the ‘dreamstate’ and wonder of the viewer to be captured.

When contemplating how the specifics of this new body of work would move from the direction of my previous paintings, I knew that I wanted the end result to be 6-sided three-dimensional cubes plus one ‘fragmented’ painting made up of multiple pieces. This decision began to outline my process. Because I like to paint on a surface that is flat and vertical on the wall, the perfect laws of geometry dictated that I work from a crucifix shaped pattern that would fold into a cube. Also because I am opposed to the idea of simply ‘decorating’ a form, working on muslin-covered acrylic (plexi-glass) was not an option to me regarding the cubes, but perfect for the fragmented painting. For each, light will filter through the paint, muslin, acetate and acrylic where suspended from the ceiling as well as away from the wall, light will enter from every side.
